social studies
For kindergarten students, one of the most important components of the social studies curriculum is rules and expectations. At the beginning of the year, I work with students to develop a list of expectations that will guide our behavior and choices in the classroom all year long. Students also learn about school-wide expectations and the reasons why it is important to follow them. Students learn about the differences between good choices and poor choices, and are able to give examples of both. In addition, we spend time discussing and exploring the concepts of respect, kindness, and responsibility.
Another major component of kindergarten social studies is learning about holidays and events celebrated by most members of our community. Students learn about the history of special holidays, as well as how people celebrate these holidays today. We often complete crafts or projects as a way to celebrate holidays in the classroom. Sometimes we even have celebrations complete with food, games, and music!
